All You Need to Know About Lip Scrubs / Exfoliators - Three Ships

What is a lip scrub? Why is everyone talking about exfoliating their lips? Why is that even a thing? What’s in it? How do you know which lip scrub is actually effective? We've got all the answers for you in today's Skincare 101.

What is a lip scrub?

Just like a body scrub, a lip scrub is an exfoliator for lips that contains particles that remove dead skin cells. Removing dry, flaky old skin from the surface of your lips means a glow up of your lips - allowing them to reveal a new, glowing layer of skin that’s been hiding underneath. If you want something else to lick other than your chapped lips (😳), you should definitely try exfoliating your lips with a lip scrub!

What’s in it?

A lip scrub contains exfoliant and emollient components - removing dry skin with sugar’s slightly rough texture, and leaving your lips soft and moisturized with its butters or oils.

When you are looking for a good lip scrub, try looking for following ingredients that are commonly found:

  • Emollients: coconut oil, shea butter, avocado oil, coconut butter, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, pure Vitamin E oil, etc.
  • Exfoliants: brown cane sugar, pure sugar crystals, coffee grounds, coarse oats, etc.

Our lip exfoliators also include effective ingredients including coconut oil, shea butter, avocado oil, jojoba oil, Vitamin E and pure sugar crystals!

Why should you be exfoliating your lips?

Just like your skin, your lips also have a lipid layer, a protective layer where it helps to balance and retain moisture. When the layer becomes unbalanced, that’s when your lips get chapped, leaving your skin flaky and peeling. By exfoliating your lips regularly, it helps the lipid layer to maintain its balance.

Exfoliating is also important to keep your lips youthful! Leaving excess dead skin on your lips can cause premature aging.

How do you use a lip scrub?

Take a pea-size amount of scrub with your finger, and gently massage the sugar crystals on your lips. Wash (or lick if you’d like ) off the excess. Follow up with your favourite lip balm for best results. 😋

Tips on exfoliating your lips

💋Massage your lips gently. This especially goes for lips that are sensitive, you wouldn’t want to damage them by exfoliating too hard. Massage it on to your lips in small circular motions for the extra plump! 😘

💋Don’t exfoliate too much, keep it to once a week. Over-exfoliation could make your lips suffer into worse condition - more chapped, dried, and sore lips.

💋Follow up with your favourite lip treatment to moisturize after you exfoliate - that’s also an effective way to prevent your lips from aging!
