Everything You Should Know About Bio Retinol

Everything You Should Know About Bio Retinol - Three Ships

Bio-retinol is one of the amazing, key ingredients in our Dream Bio-Retinol + Shorea Butter Night Cream - but what is it? We are giving you all the details in this blog post all about bio-retinol!

What is Bio-Retinol?

Bio-retinol, also know as Bidens Pilosa, is a safe, stable, plant-based alternative to retinoids for targeted skin concerns like wrinkles, acne, dark spots and uneven skin texture. Bidens Pilosa is a herbaceous plant, that is predominately native to tropical areas of South America. This flower has been known for its applications in herbal and popular medicine. Three Ships Beauty, Bio-Retinol, Bidens Pilosa Extract

Bio-retinol isn’t actually a retinoid because it doesn't contain Vitamin A - like retinoids do. The bio-retinol is a plant compound that exhibits similar properties that traditional retinoids would, but without the side effects. It is pregnancy safe, great for all skin types, and can be used daily!

How is bio-retinol different from retinol?

Traditional retinol is a Vitamin A derivative, whereas bio-retinol is a plant chemical that is not a Vitamin A derivative. Studies, however, have shown that the bio-retinol in our Dream Bio-Retinol + Shorea Butter Night Cream, Bidens Pilosa, has delivered very similar results to traditional retinol - without the irritation, and while also being pregnancy and breast-feeding safe.

Can the Dream Night Cream be used with a retinol serum?

Yes, both Dream and a retinol serum can be used in conjunction together. However, for those who have sensitive skin, please incorporate the retinol serum slowly, by using it once a week to see how your skin responds to the retinol, before increasing the frequency of use.

Are there certain skin types that would benefit more from a night cream than others?

Generally speaking, a night cream traditionally is thicker in texture, so someone with dry and flaky skin could benefit from a heavier night cream as a way to smooth out the texture of the skin. However, day creams like our Radiance Grape Stem Cell + Squalane Day Cream can be used at night.Three Ships Beauty, Dream Bio-Retinol and Shorea Butter Night Cream (Photo Credit: @melsdesigndiary)

Can teenagers use Dream?

Though it depends on the skin needs of the teenage, the results and benefits from Dream can be of interest to teens with acne-prone skin or those who want to take preventative action.

Can Dream be mixed with oil-based serums similar to how Radiance can be?

Using an oil serum is almost unnecessary since Dream is made with multiple seed butters that are moisturizing and have an occlusive property.

If you still want to use an oil serum, then we recommend applying the oil serum after Dream so it does not inhibit the absorption of bio-retinol.

On the contrary, if anyone experiences any sensitivity to retinol or bio-retinol, you can try incorporating them into your skincare routine on top/after applying your oil serum or moisturizer so that there is a buffer between the layers.

What products work best with Dream?

  • Dew Drops Serum - Products with Vitamin C work great with Dream. Our Dew Drops Mushroom Hyaluronic Acid + Vitamin C Serums is rich in antioxidants, and moisturizing.
  • Superfruit Exfoliating Mask - AHAs and BHAs will help to accelerate cell turnover, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and help to reduce breakouts by unclogging pores. The Superfruit Lactic + Multifruit 8% AHA Exfoliating Mask is a great exfoliating option that includes both chemical and gently physical exfoliation.
